Bears Quarterback Justin Fields Went Plant-Based in College and Isn’t Going Back

One of the bright spots in the Chicago Bears’ upcoming rebuild will be the growth and development of sophomore quarterback Justin Fields. His rookie campaign had already started on the sidelines — learning as a back-up as the team decided to slowly develop the number 11 pick for 2021. But things changed quickly when he started acting in the second week. As is the case with most first year signal callers, there are plenty of lessons through mistakes, game drama to dissect, and team issues beyond his control. But Fields improved as the season went on, displaying enough talent and leadership of the dual threat to be named a future starter.

Off the field, Fields eats a plant-based diet, which he has maintained since rehab with his family while in quarantine during his senior year in Ohio State. Seeing how quickly and positively his body reacted, he decided to change it forever. He was able to stick to the same nutritional plan as the Bears and has become an advocate of the benefits of a plant-based lifestyle.

The fields catch up with GQ on the focus areas for the season, how switching to a plant-based diet was the best decision he’s made for his body, and his advice to anyone curious about changing yourself.

GQ: How long does it take for your body to feel the difference when you decide to switch to a plant-based diet?

Justin field: Using plants is one of the best things I can do for my body. It just makes my body feel good overall. I noticed the difference right away — I’ll say in a few weeks, and it made it easier to continue on the plant-based path.

From before the conversion, can you describe the difference in the recovery process that you noticed before the conversion until after it was done?

After going to the plant, I realized that it helped me fight inflammation and shortened my recovery time. I was amazed at how quickly I started to recover, and my coaches were shocked too. It’s like a super power.

With it not being an easy transition, are there any foods that you still miss?

I’m the type of person that only likes it when I set my sights on something. After a few weeks, and especially seeing the difference in my body and recovery, it became very natural. Honestly, the new plant-based options they have available in the market do the trick when you’re craving a delicious burger from time to time.

Can you stick to the same eating habits as you did in college, or do you find yourself needing more protein here and there?

I was able to do pretty much the same thing I did in college. With playing midfield, you really don’t have to that strong because you don’t hit anyone. Doing the same thing I did in college really worked for me.

Earlier this year, you signed an agreement with C4 Energy. How have you used the product and how has it had a big impact on your training?

I started using C4 powder in high school and love what it does to my workouts—I’ve actually noticed an increase in energy and performance. It’s my secret sauce. Because the NFL season is longer than the college season — you’re playing the regular 17 games of the season and you have to stay healthy, make sure you get plenty of treatment and put all the right things into your body. because you may feel tired when the seasons change.
