Police received reports early in the evening of two people walking down the motorway after a collision with an Audi Q5 on the access road to Hartshead Services.

The boy was found on the western lane after the vehicle involved failed to stop at the scene of the accident.

A man was found with minor injuries on the shoulder of the freeway.

Police announced today that Matthew Rycroft, 36, will appear at Leeds Magistrates Court tomorrow on charges of causing/allowing the death of a child.

Callum’s mum opened up tonight about her pain after losing her young son.

She said: “Callum was a beautiful happy soul, unique, very funny and larger than life. He brought light, laughter and noise to every room.

“Callum had a tremendous impact on everyone who met him. It’s so quiet in the house without him.

“We are devastated by what has happened and ask people to respect our desire for privacy at this difficult time. We are very grateful for the support and nice comments we received.”

On Facebook, his sister added: “Rest in everlasting peace my beautiful little brother. I love and miss you so much!”

“I wish you were here and bugged us so much with your alarms and vacuums. We miss you so much baby.”

“We’ll all make you proud, Callum. Words cannot describe how devastated we all are. We love and miss you so much. Sleep well Callum until we meet again.”

A police spokesman said: “Officers are continuing to investigate the collision in which a Toyota C-HR struck Callum on the east carriageway of the M62 between junctions 25 and 26 at around 9.50pm.”

“As previously announced, it is believed that Callum was traveling with a man on the motorway following a previous collision involving an Audi Q5 on the access road to Hartshead Moor Service. It is believed that no other vehicles were involved in this collision.”

“A 47-year-old man who was driving the Toyota was arrested today on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has been released on bail pending further investigation.”
