Ben Roethlisberger says he should’ve been more detailed, specific with critical comments on ‘me-first’ NFL players

PITTSBURGH — After attributing a lack of playoff success to a surge in “me-first” players, former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger contradicted his comments in an interview with a local radio station on Thursday.

“I probably should have been more detailed and specific,” Roethlisberger told 102.5 DVE. “It’s not like the majority of guys are like that.”

Roethlisberger’s clarification comes a day after Steelers defenseman Cam Heyward refuted Roethlisberger’s claims on his podcast “Not Just Football with Cam Heyward” that towards the end the dynamic in the locker room shifted from a “team-first to an I- Attitude” has shifted Roethlisberger’s 18-year career.

“Cam and I have sat down many times over the past several years and had the same conversations,” Roethlisberger said. “I get Cam to support his teammates. I wasn’t trying to smack anyone specifically, I was just making a crude comment. … I agree with him and I should have been clearer. The majority of the guys on that team are team first guys.”

Heyward was Roethlisberger’s teammate from 2011 until last season, when the future Hall of Famer quarterback retired. In the latest installment of his podcast, he said he disagrees with Roethlisberger’s observation, saying it makes him “a little bit upset.”

Roethlisberger, 40, played his entire 18-year career as a starting quarterback for the Steelers before retiring in January. A six-time Pro Bowler, he finished his career with the fifth-most passing yards in NFL history (64,088) and led the Steelers to the Super Bowl championships after the 2005 and 2008 seasons.
