Bend shooting leaves 2 dead in Oregon grocery store; suspect found deceased

BEND, arch. — A person entered a grocery store in Bend, Oregon on Sunday night and fatally shot two people, authorities said.

The person believed to be the shooter was found dead at the Safeway store, Bend Police said in a statement.

Police responded to multiple 911 calls at the Forum Shopping Center in downtown Oregon around 7:04 p.m

At least one gunman fired shots in the parking lot, Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said during a news conference Sunday night.

He said the gunman then entered the safeway and shot a person in the entrance. This person was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.

The gunman continued firing inside the store, fatally shooting another person, the boss said.

The police entered the supermarket and “still hear shots,” Krantz said. They did not fire any shots, he said, adding that they found an AR-15 rifle and another shotgun “in close proximity” to the gunman who died.

Krantz did not identify the shooter or the victims. He said multiple agencies are cooperating on the investigation.

“Collecting evidence is going to take a long time,” Krantz said. “We know this is a scary thing for our community.”

Bend is a city of about 97,000 people about 160 miles southeast of Portland, Oregon.

The Bulletin newspaper reported that one person taken to St. Charles Bend was dead on arrival and one was in good health.

Molly Taroli, 40, told the newspaper she was shopping for dinner with her husband at the Safeway when the gunman walked through the store and “gunshots sprayed out”.

Taroli told the newspaper she took her own pistol from her purse. Employees, Taroli said, shouted “go, go, go!” when they tried to help people escape.

Josh Caba, another shopper at the store, told KTVZ he was with his four children when he heard multiple gunshots.

“I immediately turned to my kids and said, ‘Run!’ People were screaming,” Caba told the news outlet. “It was a horrible experience.”

One person taken to St. Charles Bend was dead on arrival and one person was reported in good health, according to Lisa Goodman, spokeswoman for the St. Charles Health System.
