Bernie Sanders Is Upset – WSJ

Senator Bernie Sanders

Bernie Sanders couldn’t contain his frustration. The Vermont socialist on Sunday cited Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin as the reason for the defeat of his socialist agenda on Capitol Hill. “He sabotaged the president’s agenda,” Mr. Sanders said on ABC’s This Week.

“The problem was that we kept talking to Manchin like he meant business. He wasn’t,” added Mr. Sanders. “This is a guy who’s a big recipient of fossil fuel money, a guy who’s had campaign contributions from 25 Republican billionaires.”

That’s always the excuse when the left’s agenda dies – someone has been bought by the rich. Only Bernie and other progressives are pure in heart and mind. He also said that Mr. Manchin doesn’t really represent the people of West Virginia. Never mind that Mountain State polls show overwhelming support for Mr. Manchin’s opposition to the “Build Back Better” agenda.

While Mr. Manchin provides a comfortable foil, Mr. Sanders knows that more than a few House and Senate Democrats are also tacitly pleased that Mr. Manchin pushed through a gargantuan tax hike less than four months before the November election seems. Her re-election will be tough enough as it is, as the 9.1% inflation is being driven in part by the Sanders agenda, which is weighing on Democrats in the polls.

The political reality that Mr. Sanders and the White House refuse to admit is that their progressive ambitions exceeded their electoral mandate. They wanted to transform the US economy and vastly expand the size and reach of government with the narrowest majorities in the House and Senate in decades.

Mr Sanders and the left were hoping they could roll over Mr Manchin and Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema. The left was close, but in the end the dissidents saved their party and the country from a future of financial, energy and welfare decline.
