Best of 2022: TV, movies, music, books, theater and art

What year was 2022?
On television, it was the year of Severance and Abbott Elementary, but also of the January 6 committee hearings. In cinema, it was the year that Cate Blanchett waved her baton in Tár and Mia Goth waved her pitchfork in Pearl. It’s the year that Beyoncé and Bad Bunny go head-to-head on our song of the year list, while Taylor and Rosalía compete for best album. It was the year of a reimagined “Oklahoma!” and totally original “Slave Play” from Hernan Diaz’s “Trust” and Sarah Manguso’s “Very Cold People”. It was the year protesters threw canned tomato soup at a Van Gogh and criminally watery mashed potatoes at a Monet.
Yes, it was such a year.
Our critics and reporters have compiled their lists of the year’s best. Now it’s your turn to agree or disagree, be surprised, shocked, delighted, outraged, disgusted, over the moon and/or confused by our choices. Share your feelings by emailing kalender@latimes.com and keep an eye out for our special year-in-pictures section, coming out on December 25th.
