Albert Einstein once said that “the intuitive mind is a sacred gift”. In the time of our ancestors, intuition – the ability to understand something instinctively and without explanation – was essential for survival. The sixth sense, that gut feeling when the hairs on the back of your neck stand up due to a change in air, could have made the difference between life and death for our cave-dwelling ur-cousins. However, in an increasingly fact-driven and distracted modern society, we have largely shed our intuition. Since women are seen as the more intuitive gender, it doesn’t take much to make the connection between this tendency to dismiss the inexplicable and centuries of patriarchal misogyny.
Yasmin Sewell has made it his mission to revive this emotional self-direction. Through her unisex fragrance brand, Vyrao (pronounced vi-ray-oh, from the Latin word vireo meaning “sprout”), she is the first to combine perfume and energy healing in this fragrance-mindfulness hybrid. Her latest, The Sixth, seeks to tap into that inner voice by incorporating both spiritual and scientific elements. Katt Nicholson, the Vyrao resident psychic, channels certain ingredients believed to exhume our intuition, such as holy basil, peppermint, fennel, and apple. An integral perspective came from the Science of Wellness program at International Flavors & Fragrance (IFF), which examines brain activity associated with smells and perfumes – such as cypress and patchouli oils, which are particularly good at promoting mindfulness. Finally, master perfumer Meabh McCurtin used these ingredients to create a fragrance that truly awakens the senses, even for someone with skeptical tendencies like me. “We all need reminders to trust ourselves, and even just using the perfume as a reminder will do wonders,” Sewell tells STYLECASTER. “Most of us lead pretty busy lives, caught up in thoughts and fear. There is always fear; It always has been and probably always will be, so we need all the reminders we can get to hang in there and listen to that inner voice, and fear is the quickest way to block that.” In addition to the carefully With carefully selected ingredients, each bottle of Vyrao fragrance contains a Herkimer diamond crystal energized by its healer, Louise Mita.
As someone not really into astrology, manifestation or crystal healing, this all sounded a bit woo-woo to me at first. For almost a month I tried the other five fragrances from The Sixth and Vyrao: the best-selling Witchy Woo for courage and creativity; Free 00 for liberation and sensuality; I am green for transformation; Magnetic 70 provides attraction and protection; and finally georgette for self-love.
My first taste of Vyrao’s power was in back-to-back photo shoots for STYLECASTER, when I desperately needed to hone my ingenuity. To my delight (and surprise), Witchy Woo’s warm, musky, peppery, and earthy scent helped me channel it. Ideas, even if they were small, poured out of me. I couldn’t exactly explain why, but the mystery, depth and complexity of this fragrance spurred me to explore and discover. It lasted practically all day with just two squirts on my neck/clothes in the morning, but I was so enamored with its mysterious and captivating energy that I reapplied in the afternoon.
On days when I needed a little extra motivation, Free 00’s fresh and citrusy combination of Orange Blossom and Sandalwood helped rouse some of that much-needed reserve energy; and for times when I was doubting myself or feeling drained, The Sixth helped re-focus my confidence with its herbaceous blend of rosemary, peppermint and patchouli.
Call it witchcraft, but being mindful and setting a clear intention for the day through the scent had a noticeable impact on focusing the energy. The concept of intention setting has been extensively debated by philosophers and New Age thinkers for millennia, and is also supported by numerous recent scientific studies in the fields of cognitive neuroscience and positive psychology. “Setting an intention is the initiation, the first step into your preferred story,” psychologist Jason Frishman once said shape. “Especially when your intention is firmly aligned with your values, you have a powerful tool to move forward and achieve your desires.” Every morning I enchanted myself with a fragrance designed to help me achieve my goals. And it worked for me.
Some may dismiss what you’re trying to achieve with Vyrao as, “Oh, it’s just the placebo effect,” but the irony is that the placebo effect is very real and scientifically backed. Her thoughts?
I’ve studied the placebo effect and it’s a very powerful thing. What the mind can do is enormous. So if you’re just going with the placebo effects and there are no specific ingredients, no science-backed formulas, it will still work. So why not use all of them?
Women have long been considered the more intuitive gender, do you think this deprecation of intuition has sexist undertones?
My goodness, where do I start? i love this question I can’t imagine how many women or just sensitive people have been shut down because of trust or working with intuition. We can go back thousands of years. I’ve experienced this so many times in my own life, but I’ve always used my gut instinct and spoken out publicly about it, and it’s served me well.
I wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t listened to that feeling – pretty much all the time. I’ve always trusted that inner voice and could never understand why some people didn’t. I feel like a lot of this sexism comes from these people who just don’t know how to deal with it and are just closed off and want to ditch it. It’s really just fear.
We come into a time when we look to great leaders for intuition and compassion. There’s always going to be one old-school, rigid-thinking male Guardian who will never understand this, but there’s a new generation that I think just gets it, they’re more awakened and born with that openness and understanding. Oh thank goodness for that!
