Biden didn’t put Medal of Honor on backward

President Joe Biden did not place Spc. Dwight Birdwell’s Medal of Honor on the back, viral videos claim.

President Joe Biden on July 5 presented four Army soldiers with the country’s highest military honor for heroic actions during the Vietnam War.

Biden presented Staff Sgt. Edward N. Kaneshiro, Spc. Five Dwight W. Birdwell, Spc. Five Dennis M. Fujii and retired Major John J. Duffy.

There have been several video clips since the ceremony in the East Room of the White House have gone viral this claim of showing Biden placing the medal backwards on Birdwell. Have some videos more than a million views.

Did President Joe Biden apply a recipient’s Medal of Honor the wrong way round?

That's wrong.

No, the social media claims are false. Biden correctly placed the medal on Birdwell.

The viral video’s low resolution makes it hard to tell if the medal was placed incorrectly, but official White House clips and news footage show it was placed correctly.

In the White House high-definition video, Biden places the medal around Birdwell’s neck 29 minutes into the video.

C-SPAN, which televises federal proceedings, also recorded the event at which Biden presented the medal.

Photos from The Associated Press also show Biden donning the medal properly. The medal’s shape and color match Birdwell’s tie exactly.

Birdwell was honored for having helped repel an attack and evacuate the wounded at Tan Son Nhut Airbase near Saigon on January 31, 1968, despite injuries to the torso and face. The attack came during an opening salvo in the so-called Tet Offensive, a particularly bloody period of the Vietnam War.

Birdwell, a member of the Cherokee Nation and an Oklahoma City attorney, had received a Silver Star for his actions. Biden said it took Birdwell’s commanding officer decades to realize that Birdwell had not received the proper recognition and, even in retirement, took steps to “make this day possible.”
