BALTIMORE (WJZ) – President Joe Biden is addressing the infant formula shortage by invoking the Defense Production Act.
His decision to address the shortfall came as parents in Baltimore struggled to find the specific formula their children needed.

“As a parent and grandparent, I know how stressful that is,” Biden said.
The shortage has affected stores across the country.
More than 40% of best-selling formulas are out of stock after manufacturer Abbott was forced to close a factory that has been linked to a number of infant hospitalizations, including two deaths.
“It is difficult to find infant formula. . . I have to call a lot of markets, like more than 12 markets,” Imani, a nursing mother in Baltimore, told WJZ.
Biden announced that he will be summoning action on Wednesday.
He said he wanted to “make sure that manufacturers have the ingredients they need to make safe infant formula at home.”
His solution is called the “Fly Campaign Formula”. Basically, the planes of the Department of Defense will be tasked with taking baby formula from overseas countries and bringing it to the United States.
Imani said the solution to the formula crisis is a long time coming. She has a two month old baby. She said that since the boy was born, she has struggled to find infant formula in stores.

“Sometimes I call and they say they have the recipe, and then I go there and it’s gone,” she said.
About 50% of babies rely on the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program for help.
Earlier this week,e The Maryland Department of Health is advising families to stay in close contact with their child’s health care provider and to help residents see if they have eligible for extended WIC benefits.
“I don’t even know if WIC still offers INFAMIL. . . . I just checked my son’s WIC and I don’t even see my son’s milk on it. ”
Imani questioned why Biden waited so long to act.
“I don’t understand because these are babies born into this world and I’m pretty sure he knows that they’re surviving this – surviving – like, they can’t eat anything else,” she said. “They don’t eat anything else.”
Hours after Biden announced he was invoking the Defense Production Act, the House passed two bills to aid the formula shortage.
A bill would give the Agriculture Secretary the ability to waive requirements that restrict WIC recipients from receiving certain brands and quantities of formulations.

The second bill provides an additional $28 million to the Food and Drug Administration so it can remove fraudulent formula products from store shelves and strengthen its workforce. .
