Billy Porter, groundbreaking and award-winning entertainer of stage and screen, honored with star on Hollywood Walk of Fame

HOLLYWOOD, LOS ANGELES– Pioneering entertainer Billy Porter has been breaking down barriers for decades. And on Thursday, the artist was honored with his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

From Broadway to TV to your stereo, Porter has sung and danced his way into the spotlight. The entertainer has won so many awards that it can be difficult to even introduce him.

Such was the case with his lengthy introduction for his Walk of Fame ceremony: “He is an Emmy, Tony, Grammy Award-winning and Golden Globe-nominated actor, singer, director, composer, and playwright.”

“I’m grateful that I’ve lived long enough to see the day when my queerness is no longer my responsibility and is now my greatest superpower,” Porter said.

This superpower is so visible these days.

Porter is also known for his over-the-top wardrobe. His red carpet appearances and high fashion are a way to draw attention not just to himself but to the issues he cares about.

“I’m grateful to stand before the world as a vocal and proud representation of what the year 2022 looks like to be black, queer and HIV positive,” Porter said.

If there’s one thing that sets Porter apart, it’s his ability to stand out. He pushes the boundaries and urges those around him to open their minds and hearts.

“You know, I’ve heard a lot of things in my life: ‘You’re too black, you’re too gay, too loud, too flamboyant, try to be quieter, try to blend in, record it, dim your lights, listen To make everyone around you feel so uncomfortable. I tried to do all those things, I really tried, but thank God I couldn’t,” Porter said.

The 53-year-old entertainer was joined at the ceremony by his sister as well as a roaring crowd of fans and friends who packed the sidewalk along Hollywood Boulevard.

“James Baldwin said, ‘It is an artist’s job to disturb the peace.’ And you all know I take my job very seriously,” Porter said.
