Blackwood, New Jersey teen battling cancer is granted wish to swim with dolphins

CHERRY HILL, NJ (WPVI) — A South Jersey teen who has battled cancer will see her dream of swimming with dolphins come true.

Eighteen-year-old Kabrina Clark walked into a Cherry Hill Subaru dealership on Tuesday, thinking she was signing papers for a new car. Instead, Make-A-Wish New Jersey had the surprise of a lifetime for her.

“We are pleased to announce that in exactly seven days your wish will be granted and you are traveling to Hawaii,” said Make-A-Wish’s Michael Dominick.

Clark, from Blackwood, New Jersey, has been battling childhood cancer for four years.

That’s when Kabrina Clark found out her dream of swimming with dolphins was about to come true.

“It was hell for me. It must have been double for her, but she never cared,” said Deziree Madden, her grandmother.

“You know what, I won’t give up. I have to live every day like it’s my last and I’ve lived every day like it’s my last and I’ve gotten through it. I got my way,” Clark said.

And now she’s taking that Hawaiian break thanks to Subaru’s Share the Love campaign, which raised $29 million to help grant children’s wishes through Make-A-Wish.

“When you’re asked this powerful question, ‘If you had one wish, what would it be?’ A wish. Knowing how long and how hard they thought about this decision is an incredible experience that we are honored to be part of,” Dominick said.

Clark has dreamed of going to Hawaii for years, but the trip couldn’t have come at a more perfect time. She is also celebrating her 18th birthday. It’s a milestone that at times she wasn’t sure was coming.

“Her hair fell out, I’m crying hysterically. She says, ‘It’s just hair mama mama, it grows back, so what?’ Madden said.

With the support of her family, Clark is a survivor.

“I get my feelings from my mother. It’s her fault,” Clark said, laughing and crying.

Now she can fulfill her only true wish.

“I love dolphins like I really love dolphins. It’s always been my dream to see them and go swimming with them and you guys made that possible and I’m really grateful for that,” Clark said.
