Bloober Team Reveals Layers Of Fears, Releasing Early Next Year

Amid rumors of Silent Hills and more, Bloober Team and co-developer Anshar Studios have revealed that the two teams are developing Layers of Fears.

This news comes through a new trailer revealed during today’s Summer Game Fest presentation hosted by Geoff Keighley, and answers a question players have been asking for a while: what exactly is Bloober Team developing? Layers of Fears is the answer, and it’s a “psychological horror chronicle that builds on the foundations of the original Layers of Fear, Layers of Fear: Inheritance, and Layers of Fear 2.” The Bloober Team says, “The psychedelic experience fans know and love will feature expanded storyline and gameplay direction, all created in Unreal Engine 5.”

Layers of Fear will be available sometime in early 2023 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC (via Steam and the Epic Game Store).

“We’re bringing back a franchise that’s very special to us in a new form that will offer players a really fresh gaming experience and shed new light on the overall story,” writes Bloober Team CEO Piotr Babieno in a press release. “Our plan was to rebuild the games, but we didn’t want to make it a simple collection of two remastered games. We have worked out a new approach, something that may not be obvious yet. But I can tell you there’s a reason we called it Layers of Fears.”

As you can see, it sounds like Layers of Fears will be some kind of Layers of Fear collection, but not as simple as a remaster of the first two games in the series. Maybe it’s a reinterpretation that uses everything the Bloober team has learned in development since the original releases. Only time will tell now. Bloober Team released the first Layers of Fear in 2016, and its follow-up, an indirect sequel called Layers of Fear 2, was released in 2019. Bloober Team also released The Medium last year.

“Players looking for mature stories with hidden meanings should prepare for an exquisite horror experience thanks to expanded storylines that shed new light on the overarching narrative,” the press release reads. “You will face a chilling madness that will span generations. Those looking for even more visceral thrills will appreciate CORSAIR’s iCUE integration system, which offers dynamic lighting effects that transform their desktop into a fully synchronized, real-time visualization of in-game actions.”
