PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — The stars of the Emmy-winning children’s television series Bluey are coming to town.
The Australian animated series, airing on Disney+, is now being adapted as a brand new theatrical stage show.
“Bluey’s Big Play” opens on Friday at the Kimmel cultural campus.
“It’s an absolutely brand new story written by Joe Brumm, who is writing the animation,” said Jacob Williams, puppetry director for Bluey’s Big Play.
“He wrote a 45-50 minute play on stage where we can see the Heeler family transition from 2D to 3D. There’s also a lot of interaction throughout the show,” Williams said. “You’ll walk away feeling like you’ve had an experience, that you’ve played with Bluey and the family. You will feel like you have seen them and danced with them.”
“Bluey’s Big Play” debuted at the Sydney Opera House in his native Australia and has performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC and Madison Square Garden in NYC.
The creators say it’s perfect for first-time moviegoers at pint size.
“When each character first takes the stage, the audience just erupts and screams Bluey and Bingo and Chili and Bandit,” Williams said. “It really shows us what we have in America, which is phenomenal for us.”
“Bluey’s Big Play” opens at the Miller Theater on Friday and has several shows on Saturday.
