Bobby East death: Former NASCAR driver fatally stabbed in California; suspected killer Trent William Millsap dead, police say

A star NASCAR driver was stabbed and the man suspected of killing him was shot dead in a confrontation with police.

Police say Bobby East, 37, was fatally stabbed at a gas station in Southern California on Wednesday.

California police responded to a gas station around 5:50 p.m. regarding a stabbing. When they arrived, they found the victim with a stab wound to the chest, police said.

During the investigation, the victim was identified as Robert John East. He was taken to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries, officials said.

Police identified 27-year-old Trent William Millsap as a suspect. They tracked him Friday to an apartment in Anaheim, California, where he was killed in an altercation with police.

“During the service of the warrant, the West County SWAT team encountered Milsap. He got into a confrontation with officers and a police K-9 was deployed. A shootout then ensued involving officers,” the Westminster Police Department said.

A police K-9 also suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound during the confrontation and was taken to an animal hospital for treatment and later released.

“At the time of the shooting involving officers, Milsap was on probation for armed robbery and had an outstanding warrant for an unrelated parole violation,” police added.

The Westminster Police Department is investigating the shooting in which an officer was involved. The Orange County Attorney’s Office, along with the Justice Department, will also investigate the shooting, officials said.

Investigators are still looking for a motive for the stabbing.

East was a three-time USAC state champion.

East, whose father was a well-known short-haul automaker, won the SAC Silver Crown Championship in 2004, 2012 and 2013. He was just 16 in 2001 when he became the youngest driver to win a special USAC National Midget race. He won 15 USAC races in 2004 and soon attempted a brief NASCAR career. He made 11 career starts in what is now NASCAR’s Xfinity Series and had two top 10 finishes in 31 career Truck Series races.

“Very sad to hear of the tragic incident involving legendary USAC driver Bobby East. He was a fucking wheelman,” tweeted former Truck Series Champion Todd Bodine.
