A three-mile stretch of US 2 west of Skykomish was closed again Monday due to the Bolt Creek Fire. The fire has burned more than 11,000 acres.

SEATTLE — A three-mile stretch of US 2 west of Skykomish was closed Monday night due to the Bolt Creek Fire burning near the roadway.

As of Tuesday morning, both directions of US 2 between Northeast Old Cascade Highway and Skykomish (Milepost 46-49) are closed, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). A 13-mile section of the roadway reopened Saturday after being closed for weeks because of the fire.

The WSDOT said crews would “assess the situation in daylight” on Tuesday. Motorists are asked to avoid the area and expect more traffic on other state highways such as I-90.

The Bolt Creek Fire has been burning since September 10 and has grown to an estimated 11,355 acres, according to InciWeb. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.

Officials said Tuesday’s hot and dry conditions slightly increased fire behavior, resulting in more wildfire smoke in the area. The conditions are expected to last through Wednesday.

Air quality near the foothills of the Cascades is expected to be moderate in parts of Snohomish, King and Peirce counties, but should improve for most places along the coast as onshore currents pick up Tuesday night, the government said Meteorologist Rich Marriott from KING 5.

As of Tuesday morning, the following evacuation orders will apply:

Areas south of US 2 near Index, including Index Estates and the Lake Serene Trailhead, and east of Skykomish from the Beckler River to Forest Service Road 66, north and south of US 2, including Foss River Road are subject to evacuations by the Level 1, which means get ready.

Baring, Grotto, and the area along US 2 east to the Money Creek Tunnel are under a Level 2 evacuation, which means you’re done. Skykomish is also below a level 2 level “leaving at short notice”.

A Level 3 evacuation order is in effect from the west side of the Money Creek Tunnel to Milestone 48 and Forest Service Road 65 (Beckler River Road).
