Boris Johnson, Justin Trudeau & Emmanuel Macron SLAM U.S. Supreme Court’s Decision To Overturn Roe vs. Wade: “BIG Step Backwards!”

That’s not a good way to keep your friends. The historic end of the Supreme Court for nationwide abortion rights yesterday drew unusual criticism from some of America’s closest allies and bucks a global trend toward more liberal reproductive rights. The decision came a day after the Supreme Court also lifted some of the modest restrictions on guns – an issue that, along with the US’ introduction of the death penalty, has long shocked other Western nations. Here’s what you need to know.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson reportedly said the Supreme Court decision will have a “massive impact” around the world. “I think it’s a big step backwards. I’ve always believed in women’s right to vote and I still believe that, and that’s why Britain has the laws it has,” Johnson said.

Similarly, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned the border decision as appalling. “No government, politician or man should tell a woman what she can and cannot do with her body,” Trudeau wrote on Twitter.

French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his “solidarity with women whose freedoms are being challenged today by the US Supreme Court,” while Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde said legal and safe abortion is a fundamental right.

“Depriving women of their individual rights is a backlash to decades of hard-won labor,” Linde said.

Meanwhile, Joe Biden himself regretted that the Supreme Court “made the United States an outlier among the developed nations of the world” when he vowed to continue efforts to achieve legal abortion. The president made his remarks on the eve of the flight to a summit in Germany, which just yesterday repealed a Nazi-era law restricting the information doctors and clinics can provide about abortions.

The Supreme Court ruled Friday in a 5-4 decision to overthrow Roe v. Calf. The court’s controversial but expected ruling gives states the power to set their own abortion laws without concern about running afoul of Roe, which allowed abortions during the first two trimesters of pregnancy.

Among the few world leaders who could be heartened by the ruling is Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, an ally of former President Donald Trump and his own country’s evangelical Christians, who hours before the decision to denounce an abortion an 11 year old girl who was pregnant as a result of rape.
