Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro Pledges to Respect Constitution After Election Loss

SAO PAULO — President of Brazil Jair Bolsonaro on Tuesday vowed to respect the constitution after he lost the presidential election Luiz Inácio Lula da Silvaended a tense 45-hour silence in which he refused to concede the results even as his allies urged him to do so.

Mr Bolsonaro did not comment on his defeat in Sunday’s overflow vote during a news conference in the capital Brasília. His chief of staff, Ciro Nogueira, next to Mr Bolsonaro during the meeting, told reporters the president has authorized him to begin a transition that will end with Mr. da Silva’s inauguration on Jan. January.
