Brazil to be top-ranked team at 2022 tournament

Brazil will go to this year’s World Cup as the top-ranked team after extending their lead over second-placed Belgium in the latest FIFA rankings released on Thursday.

They are the only nation to have played in every World Cup finals and will compete at next month’s tournament in Qatar to become a record-extending sixth crown.

Brazil won their two warm-up games in September – against Ghana and Tunisia – while Belgium lost to the Netherlands in one of their two UEFA Nations League games.

Argentina stayed in 3rd place and 2018 world champions France stayed in 4th place.

The World Cup in Qatar starts on November 20th.

Qatar will be the 50th team, just ahead of No. 51 Saudi Arabia. Ghana will be the lowest ranked team at 61st place.

Group B at the World Cup is the strongest by ranking with all four teams in the top 20 – No. 5 England, No. 16 USA, No. 19 Wales and No. 20 Iran.

Italy moved up a spot to 6th and is the highest ranked team not to have qualified for the World Cup as they missed two consecutive editions. Spain fell one place to 7th, while the Netherlands, Portugal and Denmark remained unchanged in completing the top 10.

Germany, the 2014 world champions, is No. 11, just ahead of 2018 finalists Croatia.

Russia also rose two places to 33rd place, despite not playing a recognized game in 2022 because the national team was suspended after the country’s invasion of Ukraine. Brazil to be top-ranked team at 2022 tournament
