British Airways Canceled Flights Ahead of Queen Elizabeth’s Funeral

British Royal News says if you’re due to fly out of London on Monday you could find yourself in a pickle. That’s because more than 100 flights to Heathrow have been canceled to “avoid noise” during Queen Elizabeth’s funeral. Here’s what you need to know.

Heathrow has announced that 15 per cent of its flights will be grounded on Monday to avoid noise during Queen Elizabeth’s funeral, according to new reports. The airport said it wanted to ensure skies were calm over London during the two-minute national silence as the Queen’s funeral at Westminster Abbey nears its end just before midday. No flights are allowed to take off or land from 15 minutes before the beginning of the silence until 15 minutes after the end of the silence.

Departures and arrivals will also be halted during the arrival of the funeral procession and procession at Windsor Castle and routed around the castle during Monday evening’s private family service. British Airways – the hardest-hit airline – will cancel 100 short-haul flights due to the restrictions. Virgin Atlantic said it will cancel four flights.

A Heathrow spokesman said: “Heathrow, Nats (the air navigation service provider) and airlines are supporting the ceremonial aspects for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s state funeral at Westminster Abbey and the surrender service at Windsor Castle on Monday. As a mark of respect, operations to and from the airport will be subject to appropriate changes to avoid noise disturbances at certain locations at certain times on Monday.”

Queen Elizabeth II’s State Funeral will take place at 11am at Westminster Abbey. After the burial, the coffin is carried in a procession from Westminster Abbey to Wellington Arch. From Wellington Arch the coffin is transported to Windsor and once there the State hearse travels down the Long Walk to St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle. A committal service will then be held at St. George’s Chapel.
