Britney Spears and Sam Asghari’s divorce filing shows the couple have been separated for weeks

According to court documents, Britney Spears and her husband Sam Asghari are facing a divorce after 14 months of marriage.
Asghari filed for divorce in Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday. Although news of their split only broke this week, court filings obtained by The Times show the couple have been separated since July 28.
Reports of Spears and Asghari’s split began circulating Wednesday afternoon TMZ They reported they broke up after a row over possible infidelity – allegedly by Spears – about a week ago. Spears, 41, and Asghari, 29, met in October 2016 when he appeared in Spears and Tinashe’s “Slumber Party” music video. Soon after, the couple began dating.
The “Hold Me Closer” singer announced her engagement to the model and actor in September 2021, just months before the end of her bid for the conservatory. Asghari had publicly defended Spears against her father, Jamie Spears, during the legal battle. Their wedding the following June was a star-studded affair with a guest list that included Madonna, Selena Gomez, Drew Barrymore and Paris Hilton.
“It’s just surreal, man, it’s been a minute, it’s been long overdue for us,” Asghari said on Good Morning America days after tying the knot. “We imagined it like a fairy tale and it was.”
Spears had spent the early days of their marriage adjusting to her newfound freedom from her guardianship, which did not allow her to manage her finances and make other business and personal decisions. Returning to Instagram, Spears posted a video after her wedding saying she had enjoyed her new home at Asghari and commented, “Change is so great…life is good.”
The pair have remained close while enduring various tabloid reports – many of which have been fueled by rumors and unsubstantiated reports. There was an incident at a restaurant where a guest recorded Spears eating, an apparent intervention with her family and close circle over substance use and behavior issues, and most recently an altercation between Spears and a security guard who works for NBA star Victor Wembanyama Las Vegas.
In recent months, the couple has also stayed side by side as Spears reconciled with various relatives and friends from earlier stages of her life, including her mother, Lynne Spears. There was a trip with Lance Bass to meet the former ‘N Sync member’s kids for the first time. And Spears recently reconnected with her sister Jamie Lynn Spears after a public feud, visiting her on the set of Zoey 102.
When news of their divorce broke Wednesday night, Spears said posted a cryptic photo of herself riding a horse on the beach on her Instagram account, writing that she would be “buying a horse soon.” She said she would choose between a horse named Sophie and another named Roar.
“I can’t decide!” she wrote. “Should I join the fellowship and put on a pink cowboy hat? Whatever the case, I think I’ve found happiness with Roar!”
Spears’ marriage to Asghari is her third. She was married to Jason Alexander for just 55 hours in 2004 and to Kevin Federline from 2004 to 2007. Federline and Spears have two children together, Sean Preston, 17, and Jayden James, 16.
