NEW YORK — A stage musical about princesses who woke using hits by Britney Spears will hit Broadway this summer.
“Once Upon a One More Time” features tunes by Spears including “Oops! …I Did It Again, Lucky, Stronger and Toxic, will be performed at the Marquis Theater in May.
The musical has an original story written by Jon Hartmere about classic fairy tale princesses – including Cinderella, Snow White and the Little Mermaid – who transform after reading The Feminine Mystique, a seminal feminist text.
Once Upon a One More Time was first performed by the Shakespeare Theater Company, which is known for its stately performances. It is directed and choreographed by Keone and Mari Madrid. The cast will be announced at a later date.
The temptation to use well-established, popular songs to fuel a musical is old and has recently seen Broadway shows featuring music by The Temptations, Bob Dylan, The Go-Go’s, Tina Turner and Alanis Morissette.
Broadway fans may forgive “Oops! … I Did It Again,” since many of Spears’ hits are in “&Juliet” – a jukebox musical now on Broadway celebrating one of her writing partners and producers, Max Martin – including her “…Baby One More Time” and “Stronger”.
The musical’s progress is another step in Spears’ independence after her conservatorship case drew national attention as she attempted to regain control of her finances and livelihood.
