ORCHARD PARK, NY — The Buffalo Bills are adjusting their training schedule because of a series of illnesses among the team.
Coach Sean McDermott said five players would be absent from Wednesday’s practice with illness, including defensemen Jordan Phillips and Tim Settle, linebacker Matt Milano, defenseman Cam Lewis and fullback Reggie Gilliam.
With insufficient healthy players available, McDermott said the Bills will put in less 11-on-11 work ahead of Sunday’s home game against the Cleveland Browns.
“We’re going to adjust the practice because we don’t have enough participants to practice,” McDermott said. “So we’re going to adjust a little bit, we’re going to go out there and do some singles and then just have to serve offense, serve defense, so some of that is affected by that.”
Quarterback Josh Allen will also be limited in practice Wednesday because of the right elbow injury that affected him last week. During the media-opened workout session, Allen wore a sleeve on his right arm and stood by his side for some exercises.
Allen didn’t throw in some of the drills thrown in by backup quarterback Case Keenum and Practice Squad quarterback Matt Barkley.
“It’s day to day,” McDermott said of Allen’s injury. “And I’m not saying that because something has changed, but we’re reassessing and seeing where we are after today and what tomorrow looks like and how he’s doing and maybe even what the training looks like.
“Today’s training allows some guys to train the way we train, which would not normally have been practiced due to some injuries. So we just stay flexible.”
Linebacker Tremaine Edmunds is out of practice with a groin injury, while safety Jordan Poyer (elbow) and cornerback Kaiir Elam (ankle) returned to practice after missing time.
The Bills are also concerned with the weather. Several feet of snow are expected in the days leading up to the game and the team trained indoors on Wednesday.
McDermott said the team is in full communication with the NFL should there be any weather-related changes for Sunday’s game and plans are being made if the team is unable to make it to the facility on Friday and/or Saturday.
