Buffalo Bills’ Bobby Hart suspended one game after hitting Tennessee Titans coach after game

BUFFALO, NY — The NFL on Tuesday suspended Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Bobby Hart for a game after the league said he took a swipe at a Titans player after Monday night’s game but instead hit a Tennessee met coach.

According to the league’s release announcing the suspension for violating unsportsmanlike conduct, Hart’s actions came at the conclusion of the Bills’ 41-7 win. Neither the Titans player whom Hart punched nor the coach Hart hit have been identified by the NFL.

In a letter to Hart, NFL vice president of football operations Jon Runyan wrote: “As both teams went to the tunnel, they went straight across the field to find their opponent. They approached him near the end zone and one coach had to hold them back while others shook hands.

“As soon as you and your opponent were in the end zone near the tunnel, you confronted him and immediately closed-fisted him, hitting the head of a Tennessee coach. Your aggressive behavior could have caused serious injury and reflects this clearly does not go against the high sporting standards expected of a professional.”

Hart, who played in three games for the Titans last season, is a backup offensive lineman for the Bills. In April, he re-signed to a one-year deal with the team. The eighth-year lineman was originally selected by the New York Giants in the seventh round of the 2015 draft and has also played for the Cincinnati Bengals. He has played in 85 regular-season games and started 67. Hart has earned a roster spot in training camp and preseason based on his game and ability to help out at multiple positions on the line.

He played 25% of the team’s offensive snaps against the Titans, mostly in the fourth quarter when the game was out of reach, including the final kneel. He also played seven special teams snaps.

According to the collective agreement, Hart can appeal the suspension. If he does appeal, that hearing will be before either Derrick Brooks or James Thrash, the officers jointly appointed by the NFL and NFLPA. It is not known if Hart intends to appeal the suspension.

Hart is eligible to return to the active roster on Monday, September 26 following the Bills’ Week 3 game against the Miami Dolphins.
