Bullets hit school bus with 36 students on board as man flees police in Newport, Delaware

NEWPORT, Delaware (WPVI) — A school bus with dozens of students on board was hit by gunfire during a shootout and police chase that spread across much of New Castle County, Delaware, on Friday.

The shooting was caught on video.

It all started when officers arrived at around 7:30 a.m. in the area of Route 141 and East Market Street to report a suspicious person with a gun.

This person fled and shots erupted. A bus carrying 36 students from DelCastle Technical High School was hit by bullets.

The bus was at a stop sign and was about to turn right when the shots were fired.

Three bullets hit the bus, one penetrated the bus driver’s armrest and lodged there. The bus driver drove away from the crime scene calmly and safely.

“As soon as she realized something had happened, she fled the scene and took the students straight to the school,” Superintendent Joseph Jones said.

New Castle County Vocational School District officials said a student even examined the driver for injuries.

Upon arriving at DelCastle Technical High School, the students were ushered into the auditorium.

The parents were called and a few students went home. Most went about their day. Advisors were made available and an email was sent.

“The students seemed fine; a few of them went home,” Jones said. “We’ll be following her up, but her answer seems fine.”

Police are checking whether the bullets that hit the bus were fired by the suspect or by the police.

Giancarlo Weems says his friend was on the bus and arrived at school a bit confused.

“It was very scary for him because it was like that piece of metal that saved him,” Weems said. “Any deeper he would have been hit.”

Parents picked up their teenagers and were clearly concerned about the close call.

“It was a scary experience,” said Alishia Boyce. “I hurried and called him and said, ‘What bus were you on?’ even though I knew he wasn’t.”

Superintendent Jones says he’s never seen anything like it in his 27 years.

He calls the bus driver’s actions swift and heroic.

“I also just learned that the driver will continue to drive his afternoon route to reassure the students that this is a safe place,” Jones added.

The bus is operated by a third party company called Knotts in New Castle. His owner says she thanks God no one was hurt.

The suspect then led police on a chase that ended on I-95 in Newark, where he was eventually shot.
