Cadillac Williams ‘thankful’ for stint as interim Auburn coach

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Carnell “Cadillac” Williams, Auburn’s interim head coach, took the blame for his team’s 49-27 loss to Alabama at the Iron Bowl on Saturday. There were too many mistakes for which he was responsible.

But Williams couldn’t help but look back on the last month since Bryan Harsin’s sacking and be proud of the response from players, coaches and staff. Since then, with Williams as interim coach, Auburn has gone 2-2 with victories over Texas A&M and Western Kentucky.

Williams attended the Iron Bowl as a player with the Tigers and considered adding another chapter to his history with the rivalry. Despite the game’s outcome, he couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed by the personal achievement of being the first black man to serve as head coach in the Iron Bowl’s more than 100-year history.

Williams said he told the players how he made history the night before the game and “it almost broke me”.

“We don’t dream of being head coaches, to be honest,” Williams said. “For people after me who aspire to do these things – many things in life if you can see then you can aspire and you can start to believe in it.

“Pretty cool. Pretty cool. I am very grateful and honored for that. No one can take that from me, no matter what. No one.”

Despite Williams’ success as interim manager, Auburn appears to be looking elsewhere for his next head coach. ESPN reported Saturday that the school is in talks with Liberty’s Hugh Freeze.

Williams, who is also the first black coach in Auburn history, did not address Freeze or his own future during an emotional 24-minute press conference.

He said he was “humbled and honored” by the way players have reacted to him since taking over from Harsin. Being hugged by fans and the administration “meant everything”.

Williams saw a broken team after Harsin’s firing. He said they needed help. Players weren’t doing what they were supposed to be doing academically, he said, and that changed almost immediately.

“These last four weeks have been very special,” he said. “The future is bright.”
