California launches website promoting abortion services

SACRAMENTO, California– California launched a new website on Tuesday to promote state abortion services.

The state has invested $1 million in this website. It is part of California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s effort to provide greater access to abortion in the wake of Roe V. Wade’s ouster.

“Abortion remains legal and protected in California. We’ve got your back,” Newsom said in a video message.

It provides information on what people inside and outside of California can do to access abortion services in the state.

The website lists clinics and links for those who want an abortion to receive financial help for travel and accommodation.

Abortion rights advocates say the site goes too far.

“The site is an example of extreme legislation that legislatures passed and signed into law earlier this year to transform California into an abortion-sanctuary state,” said John Gerardi, executive director of Right to Life of Central California.

California’s current budget includes $200 million to strengthen abortion services.

Opponents of abortion rights say they want to see the money spent elsewhere, while the governor and pro-choice advocates say the investment is necessary to protect a woman’s health care and voting rights.

Newsom announced the site on the same day that South Carolina Republican Senator Lindsey Graham introduced legislation that would ban abortions nationwide after 15 weeks of pregnancy. Graham presented his bill as a “responsible alternative” to what he calls permissive legislation favored by Democrats.

“That’s their agenda,” Newsom tweeted. “CA fights back.”
