Cannes festival-goers turned their backs after waiting an hour in the rain for Pedro Almodovar’s screening

A security official reportedly admitted the fiasco was “unacceptable”.
The 2023 Cannes Film Festival got off to a rocky start after hundreds of festival-goers were reportedly turned away from the screening of Pedro Almodovar’s Strange Way of Life.
Although tickets were available for the event, security announced that the theater had reached capacity after people waited in the pouring rain for more than an hour. Per The Hollywood ReporterThe event was to start at 3pm at the 1,068 seat Théâtre Claude Debussy, where the film would be shown followed by a talk with Almodovar.

Fans were instructed to arrive by 2:25 p.m., but security began informing the crowd that they would not be attending the event and would have to leave the event. Notable guests who were turned away included Los Angeles Times film critic Justin Chang and Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Janet Yang.
According to the publication, there was no clear explanation for the situation, nor should it have been possible due to the festival’s digital booking system. A security official reportedly admitted the fiasco was “unacceptable”.
Some guests were reportedly afraid of receiving a “strike” for missing a screening they had already registered for; Only three strikes are allowed before credentials expire.
