Rio Ferdinand has backed Manchester United to appoint Steve McClaren as assistant to Erik ten Hag. The former defender insists the England international is a ‘football man’ and cares about the smallest detail of the game.

While talking about YEAR YouTube shows, Rio supported McClaren’s appointment. He believes former assistant Sir Alex Ferguson would be the ideal man for the club at the moment and said:

“What you get with Steve McClaren is someone who is a football man, loves the game, enthusiastic, meticulous, cares about details. I think he would be a good addition. . The good thing about ten Hag is that he’s already in a relationship before that. And he should be able to steer him in the right direction.”

Rio Ferdinand also praised Steve McClaren for thinking ahead of his time and being at the forefront of the spiritual side of football. He say:

“He’s always been ahead of the curve. I like his bravery in that (mental work). McClaren and Ten Hag had worked together before when the Englishman was in charge of FC Twente in the Eredivisie. The two were at the Dutch club for two years and helped them win their first championship in 2010. However, McClaren left a few months later to take charge of VfL Wolfsburg before returning in 2012 and from office a few months later.

At Manchester United, McClaren was an assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson from 1999 to 2001. He then moved to Middlesbrough and began his managerial career. The England international is currently at Derby County in a part-time consulting role after stepping down as their technical director in September following the club’s transition into management.
