Chael Sonnen says Charles Oliveira is where he is because of Tony Ferguson

Chael Sonnen believes that Charles Oliveira would not be the star he is without Tony Ferguson. In his opinion, ‘El Cucuy’ should be appreciated for many things, elevating ‘do Bronx’ to superstardom is one of them.

In a recent YouTube video, ‘American Gangster’ listed a lot of things that MMA fans and fighters alike should thank Ferguson for. One of them is that he helped the Brazilian tennis player climb to 5th place in the UFC rankings.

Sonnen compared it to a situation where the top five were placed on the leaderboard and not everyone could get there:

“Tony, who’s in the loft, right? He was fifth in the world and weighed 155 pounds at that particular time. You have to understand the timeline. At that particular time, we had five stars. stars. We have 10 great fighters, we’ve got 5 stars. And great fighters can’t be ranked with stars.”

Sonnen explains that for someone to rise, one of those five superstars has to give them a chance, as Tony Ferguson did for the Brazilian:

“Tony Ferguson put the ladder down for someone else to climb. That man’s name is Charles Oliveira. Charles Oliveira is not where he is today and he wouldn’t be a world champion without Tony Ferguson.”

Chael Sonnen points out that no one ever thanked Tony Ferguson for it, a sentiment he has also spoken about before.

‘El Cucuy’ vs ‘do Bronx’ at UFC 256. The Brazilian won the match by unanimous decision. In an inhuman display of toughness, Tony Ferguson refused to exploit after being caught by Oliveira in a deep armband, which could have resulted in his arm breaking. Luckily, he survived to hear the bell ring. This victory paved the way for Oliveira to the UFC interim lightweight championship and as a result to a unified whole.

Charles Oliveira values Tony Ferguson

Contrary to what Chael Sonnen said, it seems someone appreciates what ‘El Cucuy’ has done for him, and that is Charles Oliveira.

After Ferguson lost to Michael Chandler in a knockout at UFC 274, Oliveira took to Twitter to comfort his former rival and renew an invitation to train with him at the Chute Box headquarters in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

We are one of the big dogs, ups and downs are part of our attorney. I admire you so much @tonyfergusonxt. You have history inside the Octagon. Let’s aim for “El Cucuy”! If you want, train together at ChuteBoxe headquarters in São Paulo for your next game. You are a brother!#UFC

However, in an interview with MMA Junkie, Tony Ferguson said that he had to decline the invitation because he once again considered Oliveira as his rival. Apparently, ‘El Cucuy’ is still focused on being able to progress to the undisputed lightweight belt.
