Jerry Harris, the 22-year-old breakout star of the first season of Netflix’s popular cheerleading docuseries Cheer, was sentenced to 12 years in prison after being found guilty of sexual assault and rape involving teenage boys. Harris has a history of soliciting sexually explicit images and videos from teenagers since December 2018 and faces a series of charges in different states for his actions at cheerleading competitions and on social networks.
The charges were first made public in September 2020, while the show’s second season was being filmed. Harris was initially arrested for child pornography, and then sued by his underage brothers when Harris began asking them for sexually explicit photos. He has remained in a Chicago prison since his initial arrest.
Harris agreed to a settlement that involved pleading guilty to two of seven counts, including paying a 17-year-old to send him sexually explicit pictures and traveling to Florida to “perform sexual acts.” illegal sex” with a 15-year-old youth. In 2020, he voluntarily told law enforcement that he swapped inappropriate photos of more than ten to fifteen minors on Snapchat and had sex with a 15-year-old. age at a contest in 2019.
Cheer, which debuted in January 2020, followed Navarro University Cheerleaders in Central Texas, and Harris instantly became a fan favorite. In February, The Ellen Show recruited him as an Oscar red carpet interviewer, where he chatted with everyone from Scarlett Johansson to Brad Pitt. However, it all ended in September 2020, when USA Today broke the news of an ongoing FBI investigation into his sexual relationships with minors.
Second season of Cheer premiered in January 2022, and the first episode incorporated news clips of the allegations against Harris. “Jerry,” episode five, features interviews with teammates and coaches about Harris, in addition to interviews with two of the earliest victims to emerge.
As part of his plea, Harris’ jail time will be followed by eight years of supervised release. The 12-year sentence is shorter than the 15 years that prosecutors requested, but significantly more than the 6-year sentence demanded by Harris’ attorney.
