Enzo Fernandez is the player making all the headlines ahead of the January transfer window.
After a remarkable World Cup campaign, the Argentine is linked with almost every club under the sun, but two frontrunners in this race have emerged – Chelsea and Liverpool.
In fact, according to Fabrizio Romano, Fernandez has already agreed personal terms with Chelsea, while Liverpool appear to have been in talks with Jorge Mendes over the move.
Now, speaking to GiveMeSport, Simon Phillips has claimed the Blues are willing to pay over the odds to sign Fernandez.
The player has a €120m release clause but Chelsea are willing to pay more than that amount in order to secure a deal with a more favorable payment structure.
Chelsea ready to pay
Phillips spoke about Chelsea and Fernandez.
“It’s going to be a mega deal to bring Enzo Fernandez to Chelsea,” said Phillips.
“I think Chelsea and a couple of other clubs have made offers for Fernandez in the last week.
“Obviously he has this buyout clause which is 120 million euros. Chelsea are trying to pay more at the moment to structure the deal the way they want. This gives them more favorable payment terms.”
Money is worth more now
Benfica could get big bucks for Fernandez from Chelsea but they would apparently have to take staggered payments.
While a higher fee is attractive, having $120 million in the bank immediately can be more valuable than, say, $150 million spread out over several years.
With today’s inflation, that cash is worth less by the day, while Benfica are keen to spend big on a replacement if possible.
Chelsea’s offer may be higher than what other clubs are willing to pay but Benfica may be best off selling the ‘complete’ midfielder for a huge sum as soon as possible.
