Chelsea vs Liverpool LIVE: Premier League latest score and goal updates as Axel Disasi nets equaliser

De Zerbi has ‘already forgotten’ Moises Caicedo while Chelsea and Liverpool battle for the midfielder

Chelsea and Liverpool both had disappointing seasons last year which led to numerous changes at both clubs. Former Chelsea bosses Graham Potter and Frank Lampard have been replaced by Mauricio Pochettino, who is hoping to usher in a new successful era at the club.

Pochettino has plenty of options to choose from but his focus on passing, speed and improving young players offers Chelsea the opportunity to re-establish themselves as a major threat in the top flight. Nowhere is this more evident than in the appointment of 23-year-old Reece James as club captain following the departure of Cesar Azpilicueta.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have renewed their aging midfield, moving Jordan Henderson and Fabinho to Saudi Arabia. Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister have been signed as substitutes but questions remain about the Reds’ defensive capabilities.

Added to this is the subplot of Moises Caicedo. Liverpool have accepted a £110million offer for the midfielder from Brighton but Caicedo prefers to join Chelsea as the Blues mull an improved offer for the 21-year-old. The battle for Caicedo’s signing could play out on the pitch when the two clubs meet this afternoon.

HT Chelsea 1-1 Liverpool

Chelsea dominated possession in this half, with the home team in control 66% of the time. However, it was Liverpool who started as a better team.

Luis Diaz scored the first goal and they thought they only had a second left as Mo Salah was ruled offside.

Chelsea then responded, using the link play between Reece James and Raheem Sterling to fantastic effect. Debutant Zxel Disasi volleys into the net before Ben Chilwell could thwart a goal and Nicolas Jackson fired one over the goal line.

Everything has to be paid for in the second half.

40 minutes: Illegal goal!

Chelsea think they are in front when Ben Chilwell makes a great run between the back line and gets the ball. Trent Alexander-Arnold steps forward to take him offside but allows Chilwell to get into the box, setting Alisson down and sending the ball into the net.

However, Alexander-Arnold’s decision is correct as VAR shows Chilwell had tipped into an offside position before the pass got through to him.
