Cheltenham Township police warn of stolen mail, check fraud

TWP CHELTENHAM, Pennsylvania (WPVI) — A Montgomery County man is accused of stealing straight from people’s mailboxes.

Investigators say Keyon Clark, 22, stole checks, changed the payee and amounts, and then cashed the checks for himself.

He is said to have pocketed thousands of dollars from dozens of mostly elderly victims across the Cheltenham community.

“Like getting a job, how seriously,” said Mount Airy’s Sherri Brown. “Elderly people in particular are working hard for what they have, and they are at the time in their lives when they shouldn’t be worried about such things.”

Just after 3 a.m. Thursday, police said they saw Clark standing by the mailbox on Elkins Park Drive-up.

When officers approached the police, Clark said he ran and dropped pieces of mail along the way. A police K-9 team caught him in a nearby forest.

Officers issued a search warrant for his car and home in Philadelphia.

“They found dozens more pieces of stolen mail, hundreds of cheques, credit cards, debit cards and the like,” said Lieutenant Andrew Snyder of Cheltenham Borough Police.

Check fraud has been a constant problem throughout the region. Back in May, 6abc spoke to a victim in Lower Moreland. A suspect tried to cash his stolen check for $13,000.

“Of course it made me angry because at times like this people fight and someone tries to steal from you?” said Philip Nanos of Lower Moreland Township.

Not only that, there are other ramifications when checks don’t make it to their intended recipients.

“We had one victim whose car payment never made it,” Snyder said. “So they received a notification that their car was going to be repossessed because they didn’t make their payment on time. We had a mortgage payment from someone that didn’t come through, so their house may be foreclosed on. There was a gentleman whose child support was never paid.”

So the police say if you can, use online banking or drop off your mail at the post office.

“I’m really sad,” said Myla Skeiker of West Mount Airy. “I think there’s a lot of people in the community that they trust to put things in the mailbox and they get where they’re supposed to go.”

Police said it’s possible this suspect could face federal charges as this pertains to the USPS.

Police believe there could be more victims. So if it happened to you too, please get in touch with Cheltenham Detectives.
