‘Chicago Fire’ Season 10 Finale Spoilers — Casey/Brett

Casey and Brett are both back in Windy City for their big “Stellaride” wedding this Wednesday Chicago Fire final season (NBC, 9/8c) – but only one of them is likely to stay in Chi-Town.

With another separation looming for the couple, as Casey prepares to move back to Oregon while Brett remains in Chicago, the pair are at a crossroads. And Severide and Stella’s wedding only adds to the questions Casey and Brett have about their own futures.

Below, co-stars Derek Haas and Andrea Newman talk about bringing back Jesse Spencer, how Casey changed during his time apart, and why love may not be enough for Casey and Brett.

TVLINE | What was the conversation with Jesse about coming back like? Did you have to convince much?
DEREK HAAS | Oh that’s right, Andrea and I and [executive producer Michael] Gilvary, basically, no matter what happened, we said, “Jesse, you’re coming and making this finale.” So we begged him a lot, begged and offered him the moon so he could come back and do the finale. But he was the greatest and he was even before we started all of that. This character pledges he will be the best man at Severide’s wedding. We are very grateful [Jesse] that he will return and honor that pledge.

Chicago Fire Casey is backTVLINE | What made now the right time to bring him back? And under what circumstances does Casey come back?
ANDREA NEWMAN | It was the perfect timing for the reasons Derek just talked about, the fact that he had promised to be Severide’s best man after the engagement and he’s kept his word. So he’s back for that. And it was also a pivotal moment in his relationship with Brett. They have just spent some time together, and now they will have to part again because they live in these separate places. So he went back to her, and they went to this wedding together and had that moment that everyone has at a wedding, where you look at other people’s relationships and it makes you re-price yourself. So that’s where they were in that finale.

TVLINE | Brett has been away from Casey for quite some time, off screen, and we haven’t really seen how that affects their relationship. How has their relationship developed over time together?
NEWBIE | For the two of them, as we’ve seen in the past, they grow closer with every moment they’re together. They really love each other. But the question is bigger than that. Bigger than the time together. It’s about time they’re apart right now and the fact that they have to be apart in order to be able to have their own lives. So that was also the crux of the matter in the finale.
HAAS | And I think when you’re in a long-distance relationship, saying goodbye doesn’t get any easier. They become more difficult. And so we’re going to see a little bit of that.

TVLINE | It’s been too long since we’ve seen Casey. Will this experience in Portland, with two boys, in a different firefighting field, change him when he returns?
NEWBIE | Well, it’s interesting that you ask that because Brett said exactly one thing up to that point, which was seeing him in Oregon, it felt like where he wanted to be, the role of a father. He always wanted to be a father. I think he established that, even while in the pilot, perhaps, certainly early on, that was something he was very interested in. And now he’s in this new place, fighting wildfires and being a father, and that feeling is the perfect fit. So we will see a Casey who is in a very happy and fulfilled place in terms of life and the big question mark is his relationship with Brett.

TVLINE | With this episode coming to an end, are you hoping that we’ll see Casey again next season? Or is there a sense of closing Casey’s story with this finale?
HAAS | The door is always open from our side. I don’t know what the future holds. It’s been like that with a bunch of our characters in the past where we just loved the actors and we understand when a show goes on for that long that people aren’t going to commit their whole lives to us. . We tend to like having characters go back to the past, so there’s no end, as far as our show goes, for Casey.

Chicago Fire Casey is backTVLINE | Shall we help Casey make good on his word to throw Severide into that crazy bachelor party?
HAAS | Well, things won’t go as planned. So we won’t necessarily throw a bachelorette party. But we’re going to have a crazy, crazy wedding.
NEWBIE | Well, literally, nothing went as planned for this wedding.
HAAS | And I would say that they shouldn’t hold Tony and Capp responsible for anything. We will just say that. I don’t want to spoil anything. [Andrea laughs] They are really good at fighting fires. Other than that, I don’t know that they should be in charge of anything.

TVLINE | What kind of finale are we in store? What kind of note ends?
HAAS | You know how you do [May Sweeps Scorecard] category? We are checking all the boxes! Every box is checked in some way, shape or form. That’s not the way I want to do it. I want it to be super happy, everyone cheering at the end. It was all just hugs and kisses, and the wedding went exactly as planned, and each of our characters showed up and didn’t miss it. But Andrea says she can’t stand it.
NEWBIE | Don’t listen to him! Now he doesn’t speak. [Laughs]
