The People’s Liberation Army of China will take part in Russia’s forthcoming military exercises in Vostok (“east”), China’s Defense Ministry said last week. According to Beijing, the decision is “unrelated to the current international and regional situation”. (India will also participate, underscoring New Delhi’s lack of interest in quid pro quo US support for its interests.)
An important question follows: will Europe respond to Beijing’s involvement in the exercises, which will take place from August 30 to September 5, while Russia’s military rampage through Ukraine? That’s a question because European relations with China are at a critical juncture.
