Choco Taco, the popular ice cream snack, is being discontinued after nearly 40 years

The popular Klondike product, packaged ice cream in a taco-shaped cone, has been discontinued.

“Over the past two years, we have experienced an unprecedented increase in demand across our portfolio and have had to make very difficult decisions to ensure nationwide availability of our entire portfolio,” a Klondike Brand representative told CNN Business and in an email added, “We know this can be very disappointing.”

You could still potentially find Choco Tacos while sellers are going through their inventory, the rep said.

During the pandemic, it became common for companies to downsize their portfolios to meet demand for their most popular items. But even less popular products have loyal fans who are upset by the decisions.

“Choco Taco fell,” explained one Twitter user. “They always take the best from us,” mused another. Others berated Klondike for the decision.

The choco taco was born in the early 1980s, according to a 2016 article in Eater. Initially, it was primarily available through ice cream trucks. Eventually, Unilever, which now owns Klondike, began to distribute the product more widely.

Ice cream in a cone with toppings isn’t that innovative. But ice cream in a taco shell — that was a game changer, according to inventor Alan Drazen.

“Generally, when you eat a cone of sugar, you’re eating the nuts, the chocolate, and the ice cream on top,” Drazen told Eater. “With the Choco Taco, you get ice cream, croissants, nuts and chocolate in almost every bite.”

For many, the Choco Taco brings back long-gone memories of biting into a cold, sweet treat on a hot summer’s day. Others may have more recent memories, particularly because Taco Bell — which sold the product years ago — brought it back to some stores for a limited time earlier this year.

However, all hope is not lost. Some notable fans are already trying to find ways to revive the choco taco.

“I want to buy the rights to your Choco Taco and keep it from melting away from the childhood of future generations,” Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian tweeted to Unilever, Klondike’s parent company. Patrick Shriver replied that he would “get into it.”
