Christian McCaffrey, in 2nd game as 49er, makes history with TD trifecta

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — It wasn’t long before the new San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey made a piece of history on his new team.

On a day when the Niners defeated NFC West rivals Los Angeles Rams without jack-of-all-trades Deebo Samuel, McCaffrey provided the ultimate all-round performance. McCaffrey shot for, ran for and caught a touchdown in San Francisco’s 31-14 win as the Niners advanced to 4-4.

With his 1-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter, McCaffrey became the first player since LaDainian Tomlinson in 2005 to throw, run, and catch a touchdown in the same game. McCaffrey is the fourth player to complete the trifecta since the 1970 merger.

It was the Niners’ eighth straight regular season win over the Rams, but McCaffrey’s first taste of the rivalry. He passed right in and had one hand in 183 yards from scrimmage, including 94 yards rushing and 55 yards receiving on 27 touches.

McCaffrey started his big day with his second career touchdown pass. On the second and eighth of the Rams ’34 at 12-10 in the second quarter, Niners quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo threw McCaffrey to the right flat. McCaffrey caught it behind the line of scrimmage and rolled to the right before searching deep on the right for Brandon Aiyuk in the wideout.

McCaffrey lofted a pass with enough air underneath for Aiyuk to spin multiple times and catch him for a touchdown.

McCaffrey contributed to his peak late in the third quarter when he climbed the ladder in the right corner of the endzone to collect a 9-yard touchdown pass from Garoppolo and put the Niners 17-14 ahead.

The touchdown received was the first McCaffrey scored as a Niner, putting him in rare company in franchise history. McCaffrey and Emmanuel Sanders (Week 14 of 2019) are the only Niners to have had a passing touchdown and a received touchdown in the same game in the past 70 years.

McCaffrey’s tremendous performance came in his second game as a Niner and his first after a full week of practice. San Francisco gave 2023 second, third and fourth round picks and 2024 a fifth round pick to the Carolina Panthers for McCaffrey in an Oct. 20 trade.
