Chun Li Finally Has an Asian American Voice Actor
For Kwan and for Capcom, these two versions of Chun Li are different people with years of life experiences that provided Chun Li with opportunities to grow and mature in their own ways. As such, Kwan wanted to convey something new with the character that would reflect her development while retaining the vital essence of her personality.
past lives
Beforehand street fighter 6Kwan is best known for her roles as Suki in Avatar: The Last Airbender and Sam Woo on the NBC sitcom California dreams. Suki is a fighter who is part of the Kyoshi Warriors, a group created by Avatar Kyoshi of the Earth Kingdom to protect her homeland, the island of Kyoshi. In addition to her hand-to-hand combat skills, Suki is also proficient with weapons such as war fans and katanas. Coincidentally, there are some similarities between Chun Li and Suki.
Both characters exude maturity and also specialize in hand-to-hand combat. And since then, Chun Li has had to deal with one of them street fighterKwan has been M. Bison’s main antagonist for many years and thinks the character has a more villainous personality compared to Suki. Chun Li is extremely disciplined and is often the voice of reason in groups. Despite her down-to-earth demeanor, she sometimes acts rashly when criminals insult her pride as a police officer, which can cause her to lose her better judgment—especially when fighting Bison, the man who murdered her father.

Kwan brings the same variety of perspectives to the roles she plays. At San Diego Comic-Con 2022, Capcom brought Kwan to the on-site spotlight street fighter 6 Stood and gave her a tour where she could see people playing the game in real life. A shiver ran down her spine. She says it was surreal to see people play as Chun Li and hear her own voice.
Even after all these years, Kwan is still trying to find the original contract for the old Chun Li voice sample because the character ended up being so popular. Chun Li is a badass, strong and determined fighter by every measure, and Kwan says she gets emotional knowing people are looking up to her. “I only see her in street fighter 6“Even when it comes to the little bits, there’s a kind of calm before the storm about her, that she’s able to persevere and just persevere,” says Kwan. “She has enough courage and strength not to back down, which is pretty impressive and I admire that too.”
