Cleveland Browns RB Nick Chubb admits scoring late touchdown vs. New York Jets ‘cost us the game’

BEREA, Ohio — Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb blamed the New York Jets for Sunday’s loss and said he should have gone under instead of scoring in the last two minutes.

Chubb’s 12-yard touchdown run with 1:55 to play put the Browns 30-17. Rookie kicker Cade York then missed the extra point. But with the Jets already running out of timeouts, the Browns could have knelt and ended the game there if Chubb hadn’t scored.

Instead, the Jets became the first team in 21 years to close a 13-point deficit in the final two minutes of the game.

“Yeah, I probably shouldn’t have scored straight away,” Chubb said Tuesday. “Honestly, looking back, it cost us the game. Many things went wrong, not just one thing. But as a unit, as a team, we could have done all things differently. But it’s only a problem because we didn’t win. So I probably should have gone under.”

After Chubb’s touchdown, the Jets answered in the second game of the following drive. Quarterback Joe Flacco found Corey Davis wide open on the touchline for a 66-yard touchdown.

The Jets then recovered from the onside kick, and Flacco quickly propelled New York back up the field, topped off with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Garrett Wilson to put the Jets 31-30 with 22 seconds left.

“In the end, I’ve been in this situation before and I really can’t give it credit to anyone but myself at this point,” said Chubb, who rushed for 87 yards and three touchdowns against New York. “I think the biggest thing is that I knew what was going on and I thought it was game over if I’m being honest.”

Two years ago, Chubb stepped out at the 1-yard line after a 59-yard run in the dying seconds against the Houston Texans. The Browns knelt with the ball to secure the 10-7 win.

Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said he made a mistake by not telling Chubb to be relegated on Sunday.

“That’s something I’m responsible for communicating to this bunch,” Stefanski said. “If you go up a potential 14 points in two minutes, you should quit this game. Yes, I wish I had told Nick that and Nick would have done it.

“But that doesn’t change the fact that we had a lot of chances to win that game.”
