Cleveland Cavaliers All-Star Guard Darius Garland has agreed to a five-year rookie contract extension for a maximum of $193 million, which could be worth as much as $231 million, his agent, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul, said on Saturday to ESPN.
Garland’s deal is the richest in Cavaliers history and comes after a third season in which he averaged 21.7 points and 8.6 assists per game, was named an All-Star for the first time, and brought the franchise into the play- in tournament of the Eastern Conference.
He’s one of the cornerstones of a promising Cavaliers core that includes all-star center Jarrett Allen and rising star Evan Mobley. Garland, the No. 5 in the 2019 NBA draft, helped the Cavaliers finish over .500 for the first time since LeBron James in 2018.
Garland must be selected to one of the three All-NBA teams next season to earn the $231 million Supermax Escalator.
