“Close to being a part of that”

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola believes his side could be in the same conversation as Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United if the Sky Blues win the 2021-22 Premier League title.

Cityzens are on track to win their fourth league title in five years. Meanwhile, Manchester United have won four trophies in three years under Ferguson. Guardiola admits that only United have achieved this feat before under the Scotsman and claims that City will try to join the ranks of their nasty rivals.

Manchester City are currently at the top of the table with just 1 point behind second-placed Liverpool. Cityzens will face Aston Villa at the Etihad on the last day (May 22) and will need a win to secure a fourth title in five years.

Speaking before the game, Guardiola said in a press conference (via Reuters):

“Of course it would be great (winning four out of five seasons). When I came in and everyone here said the Premier League is really tough, the hardest league, everyone wins different trophies.”

He added:

“Just Sir Alex Ferguson with United can do four out of five years. When this happens, you realize how important United are in this era and how he can do it. many times. We’re about to be a part of that and we have to try to make it.”

Manchester City enjoyed a narrow 2-1 win when they faced Aston Villa in a back-to-back fixture in December at Villa Park.

Manchester United hope a major rebuild can help close the gap on Manchester City and Liverpool in the Premier League

United finished second in the Premier League last season behind Manchester City. They then signed Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho last summer to bolster their title hopes this season. However, their season has been a huge disappointment.

The Red Devils will end the season with the worst points ever in the Premier League. Now they will also have a fifth consecutive season without a title. Ralf Rangnick’s side face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in their final game on May 22.

Manchester United will now be hoping for a major rebuild under incoming manager Erik ten Hag. The Dutchman will take over as interim coach Rangnick after the match against Palace.

While United are well ahead of Manchester City and Liverpool, they will hope to at least start to close the gap from next season onwards.
