Colin Trevorrow to Direct Atlantis Fantasy Movie for Skydance

For his next film, director Colin Trevorrow dives under water.

Per the Hollywood reporterthe director of Jurassic world and near-director Star Wars Episode IX will direct and produce Atlantis for sky dance. The filmmaker will be working from a screenplay written by HBO executive producer Charmaine DeGraté house of the dragon (who also wrote the fantasy dramas fifth episode) and will be a writer/co-EP on Disney’s upcoming series Star Wars: The Acolyte.

According to the outlet, the film will be a fantasy adventure film whose premise is based on the fabled underwater civilization. Atlantis (the kingdom) has been a staple of pop culture for decades. In case you haven’t read it The Silmarillion or animorphs, You’ve seen it come to life through TV and movies, such as: Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Doctor Who, or (technically) Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. And even something like Avatar: The Way of Water As far as water technology goes, Trevorrow has a lot of influence to make.

Atlantis was originally in production at Universal with a script by Alien: Covenants Co-writer Dante Harper. Trevorrow was also slated to direct and develop the film at the time, and Skydance snapped him up when Universal decided to hand the project back to the director. Since then, he and DeGraté have retooled the project, although it still retains the aforementioned premise that was in Harper’s script.

Remarkably, the film will be Trevorrow’s first film, having wrapped a loop around the film Jurassic world franchise with last year’s Jurassic World Dominion. You may remember that he spoke of wanting to do an Atlantis film end of 2021months before domination release. Over and beyond, Atlantis will also serve as the director’s first original film (read: non-franchise film), which he has helmed since 2017 The Book of Henry. For DeGraté, this will be her first feature film project. At the time of writing, Skydance hasn’t given a specific date Atlantis.
