We had our first losing week of the season last week, 4-5. But we’re still seven games over .500 for the year. And let me tell you we could easy have had a record number of games this weekend. Longest list of teams in situations I like in the season. But we showed restraint. Why? I honestly do not know. Just seemed reckless to hand out double digits. So let’s narrow it down – but just a little bit – to 8.
Buffalo (-2, 54.5) at Bowling Green
12 p.m. ET on ESPN+, Doyt L. Perry Stadium, Bowling Green, Ohio
Van Pelt’s Pick: Bowling Green (+2)
Did I have a MAC game this year? I hadn’t. Let’s fix that. Want to take a MAC dog home with your buddy Scott for lunch? You don’t have to, but we’re at home against Buffalo on Bowling Green.

No. 4 Michigan (-22.5, 59) in Indiana
12 p.m. ET, Memorial Stadium, Bloomington, Indiana
Van Pelt’s Pick: Indiana (+22.5)
Mizzou starred in the very first Hottybees game last week – the Hold On To Your Butts special. These are teams catching large numbers and it feels scary. So hold on tight and hope the Hoosiers can hang out against GoBlue, which is visited by Penn State next week. Hope for a little preview.
SVP: 3-2 all-time picks against top-5 Michigan
#8 Tennessee (-3, 64) at No. 25 LSU
12 p.m. ET on ESPN, Tiger Stadium, Baton Rouge, Louisiana
Van Pelt’s Pick: LSU (+3)
We’re busy midday again this week – wish that was at night. The high-flying vols are hard to contain, but we’re keen on the Bayou Bengals at home in a rare candy spread.
SVP: 5-3-1 all-time pick for LSU
Tulsa (-6, 45) in the Navy
12 p.m. ET, Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, Annapolis, Maryland
Van Pelt’s Choice: Navy (+6)
Well, to honor America, a service academy sandwich. Marine at home gets less than a TD from Tulsa. In Annapolis we support the Midshipmen catching 6 against Tulsa who just hung out with Ole Miss and Cincinnati. Middies are not a fun sequel.
SVP: 5-3 all-time picking Navy
No. 20 Kansas State (-1.5, 45) in the state of Iowa
4 p.m. ET on ESPNU, Jack Trice Stadium, Ames, Iowa
Van Pelt’s Pick: State of Iowa (+1.5)
Okay, State of Iowa – we’re back with you. Last week, you held Kansas five touchdowns under their scoring average, gave up only 10 first downs, and somehow still lost. Might have something to do with the three missing FGs. Kansas State is a very popular team this week as they visit Ames – make us proud Clonies as we’re by your side again.
SVP: All-time 3-0 against Kansas State
Army at No. 15 Wake Forest (-17, 67.5)
7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN3, Truist Field, Winston-Salem, North Carolina
Van Pelt’s Choice: Army (+17)
I told you it’s a Service Academy sandwich and Army is the other piece of bread. You’re wondering – why am I betting my money on the Black Knights of the Hudson – didn’t you have them in that game last year? I sure have. Didn’t wake 70 points last year. Yes – that happened too. But we’re not here to badmouth America. We are here to honor the people who defend our freedom… by exercising… ours… to bet on it. Plus 17. Not sure how that’s enough. Hope it is.
SVP: 3-0 all-time picking service academies vs top 15 teams
Florida State ranked 14th NC State (-3, 52)
8 p.m. ET on ACC Network, Carter-Finley Stadium, Raleigh, North Carolina
Van Pelt’s Pick: Florida State (+3)
Beaten at home by Wake Forest last week, Florida State is now headed to Raleigh to take on the Wolfpack. We go with the Noles and get an oddly small number given the respect the Wolfpack got at Clemson last week. Somehow one wonders.
SVP: 3-1 all-time Florida State pick in night games
No. 12 Oregon (-13, 70.5) in Arizona
9 p.m. ET, Arizona Stadium, Tucson, Arizona
Van Pelt’s Pick: Arizona (+13)
Finally, where’s our man Tucson Slim? I think he graduated and is undoubtedly out in the workforce doing great things. Arizona starts a nasty five-game list against ranked opponents, and first place is Oregon. I’ve been to Tucson and it gets weird – but it gets really weird when the Ducks come over. We say Bear Down Arizona and are catching double digits at home with the Cats, who have already tripled last season’s overall wins.
SVP: 6-3 all-time Arizona selection
There were so many more, I hope we picked the right ones to share with our beloved viewers.
