Colts QB Nick Foles carted off after Kayvon Thibodeaux sack

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Nick Foles was ruled out of Sunday’s game against the New York Giants because of a rib injury.

Released by Giants edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux late in the second quarter, Foles fell on the ball with Thibodeaux also falling on Foles. The strike made Foles writhe in obvious pain and the coaches immediately called for a trolley to help him off the field.

As Foles lay on the ground, Thibodeaux made snow angels next to him.

Foles was on the surface at MetLife Stadium for a few minutes before getting up and walking to the touchline, holding his lower left. He spoke to coaches and eventually got on the cart and was wheeled off the field.

Thibodeaux said after the game, a 38-10 Giants win that secured a wildcard berth, that he didn’t know Foles was injured at the time. He added that he didn’t know the celebration was looking bad until he checked his phone.

He was drafted into the Colts’ starting lineup for last week’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers following the ongoing struggles of former starter Matt Ryan. The Colts only scored six points in six quarters with Foles under center.

Foles finished Sunday’s game 8-for-13 for 81 yards and an interception that was returned for a Giants touchdown.

The injury brought Sam Ehlinger back into action. Ehlinger, who started with losses in Weeks 8 and 9, threw his first career touchdown pass in the third quarter, finishing 60 yards 9-for-14.

The loss dropped the Colts to 4-11-1. They’re battling for one of the top picks in the NFL draft and are expected to think hard about picking a quarterback.

“We still have a week,” said Colts interim head coach Jeff Saturday. “I have to make sure these guys play good football for the last week and try to get a win and end this season on the right way.”

ESPN’s Jordan Raanan and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
