Community comes out in support of Roxborough High School students after fatal shooting

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Holding signs and messages of support, members of the community stood outside Roxborough High School in Philadelphia on Friday morning, just days after five teenagers were shot dead as they walked off the field after a soccer game.

“We all love Roxborough. It’s a wonderful place and for this to happen so close to our homes, to these families, to these children – it’s devastating,” said Roxborough’s Nate Morrissey.

“Looking back when I was that age I would have appreciated if the community had come out and given their support. Hopefully it will bring a smile to someone’s face, or at least some peace and comfort to know they are not alone,” said supporter Greg Young.

An aid center was also planned for nearby Saul High School, where 14-year-old Nicolas Elizalde was a freshman.

Nicolas played for the Roxborough High football team. He didn’t survive.

Four other teenagers were shot, three of them football players from Roxborough High.

“The community has been in turmoil for the past few days. There’s a lot of trauma, a lot of fear. There’s a lot of grief, loss,” said Robert Ashford, the chief executive of Unity Recovery in Roxborough, who also lives in the community.

“Maybe for one day we can show that there is hope, that there is a chance for a cure,” Ashford continued.

On Thursday evening, family and friends gathered for a vigil in Gorgas Park.

Meanwhile, a memorial is growing near the shooting range.

Police are still searching for the five gunmen and say the suspects waited six minutes before jumping out of the SUV and firing more than 60 shots.

The Ford Explorer was recovered in southwest Philadelphia on Wednesday evening.

“I’m a teacher and I’ve had teachers that I knew were losing students and it’s really important for the community to come together and show these kids that we’re giving them what we want to see come out of them.” said Roxborough’s Julie Morrissey.

The motive for this shooting is still under investigation.

A $45,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
