complicated co-op for puzzle die-hards

BILLIONotal Mayhem Games’ We were here the series has proven itself as a reliable franchise for duos seeking the challenging adventures of first-person co-op puzzlers, but the studio’s latest effort, We Were Here Foreveris the most difficult by far.

If you’re new to the series, one of its standout features is the use of walkie-talkies, meaning players have to hold down a button to stay in touch while apart. It’s also unforgiving – if you try to talk to another player, you’ll be cut.

The result is, We Were Here Forever requires careful communication to overcome many challenges and barriers. They are staged by the looming villain Jester and his clumsy dummy minions, who occasionally appear to frighten the player and keep them on their toes.

Forever uses this setup to create a surprisingly large amount of footage and a healthy atmosphere, with a bit of weight in between. This makes it a difficult, often stressful experience, especially when you’re burying your head in a single puzzle, destroying your intellectual self-esteem.

As a puzzle game, it does a great job at bringing players down, right at the core of their critical thinking. When your mind is filled with complex symbols and solutions, simple considerations like knowing your left from your right, or your ability to distinguish basic shapes – these concepts quickly slip through the cracks. out of your brain and leads to some serious laughs when you try and turn around for your senses.

You’ll start making names for things that already exist – ‘ Crash Bandicoot gems’ or ‘Mike Wazowski’ are two of my favorites. But it’s these moments of created nonsense that really feel like the bonding agent and lead We Were Here Foreverthe best moments. If you are looking to test and develop your relationship with a friend, this would be a good place to start.

The environment of the game is very beautiful and lively with smart sound design. The sturdy levers provide a satisfying creak and the buttons make a solid click. But there is a certain fatigue that comes with it We Were Here ForeverAdjacent fantasy steampunk art style and color palette. Forever has clever visual ideas and puzzle pieces, but unfortunately they all feel cut from the same fabric. It’s nothing you’ve never seen before and the series has maintained it through a number of games now. Consistency isn’t bad, but I think it’s doable with a reshuffle.

The worst visual part of the game is that the busier environment can make you think that the innocuous assets are the puzzle solution. It’s fun when you realize you’re an idiot, but you’ll waste a lot of time staring at walls in this game, so the less of that the better.

In regards to performance, my collaboration partner and I also experienced some difficulties moving into new areas. Nothing breaks the game, but it’s annoying and unexpected that every new vista comes with some chugging, since we’re playing on the 3080 and 2080 Ti, respectively.

I found that ForeverTheir puzzles are often lengthy and delivered in stages, often spanning the same type of solution. Both challenging and rewarding when they have to deal with, the question “Did you figure this out? Do it three more times! ” schtick is sometimes stale. Some eureka moments tend to lose their vitality when drawn. Still, the pacing is pretty good and you’ll jump between practice and practice sections, but I’m often left off by the more challenging puzzles about Portal 2co-op campaign or Hazelight’s strong narrative backbone It takes two. Those are two highlights of the genre that are hard to match, sure, but We Were Here Forever lay a few notches below them, even if it was polishing in a different direction.

I don’t care much for the story itself, which is unfortunate as this is clearly one of the areas where Total Mayhem is looking to innovate. However, I think it will likely please fans of the series who have a good background in the game’s world and are really looking for more lore and mystery. There’s a fair amount of dialogue from the omniscient characters, but I found it confusing and it didn’t cause any laughs. Your mileage may vary, but comedy is almost always player-made in my case.

Reasonable warning if you’re new to the series: We Were Here Forever There are some brutal puzzles to deal with. I can’t think of a game with more asymmetrical challenges that are harder to overcome, other than the heaviest punishment Portal 2 mods. This is a credit to the game’s design, but it means it’s not something you can play with your kids, unless they’re just a toddler as a MENSA member. Really Dark souls of co-op puzzle games, if you’ll forgive me for such comparisons.

Unfortunately, the suggestion system leaves a lot to be desired for the long-timers stuck, offering vague ideas instead of any near-identical solutions. I understand why, but I also think there’s no shame in being able to move on when it feels like something is beyond your capabilities. In my eyes, accessibility always overcomes difficulty. There are some great quizzes later in We Were Here Foreverbut you might not see them without close attention and a healthy dose of dedication.

If you don’t mind jumping between satisfying pleasure and feeling like you’re trapped in a cursed geometry layer, then We Were Here Forever will work for you. It’s a great co-op game with great puzzle design and great visuals, but it’s by no means an easy ride. I wouldn’t recommend it as a sequel to something like It takes two – the challenging level is far different and it has no narrative content. But if you’re already a fan of the series or love the asymmetrical co-op challenge, you’ll enjoy this one.
