Nate Diaz has had a tremendous amount of support ahead of Saturday’s final fight of his UFC contract, including from old rival Conor McGregor.
McGregor took the time to congratulate Diaz on his personal social media on Saturday’s contract completion. The two fought twice in 2016, sharing the rivalry 1-1. A third fight has long been speculated but has yet to materialize.
“Congratulations to Nate Diaz on making it to the end of his contract with the UFC and as a true superstar goer,” McGregor wrote on Twitter. “An incredible achievement. Fair play. Our trilogy will take place.”
Earlier this week, Diaz also expressed confidence that there would eventually be a third fight between the two. In an interview with Inside Fighting, Diaz said the timing for the trilogy isn’t right now, but “it’s sure to happen at some point.”
Diaz (20-13) meets former interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson (25-7) in the main event of UFC 279 at T-Mobile Arena. He was originally scheduled to face rising Chechen-Swedish contender Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 279 in Las Vegas, but Chimaev missed the weight on Friday.
The UFC tried to sign Diaz for a new contract all year, but he chose to fight out his contract and test the free hand. Diaz, 37, has fought exclusively in the UFC since 2007.
The rivalry between McGregor and Diaz began in late 2015, when Diaz accused McGregor of “taking everything I worked for” in a post-fight interview in Orlando, Fla. Diaz accepted a short-term fight against McGregor in March 2016, upsetting the Irish star by submitting in the second round. McGregor immediately vowed to avenge the loss and defeated Diaz by majority decision in a five-round bout five months later.
McGregor, 34, has not fought since July 2021. He’s still recovering from a broken leg sustained during a TKO loss to Dustin Poirier. He indicated last year that he has two fights left in his UFC contract.
