COVID updates: Biden’s condition continues to improve with sore throat now predominant symptom, President’s physician says

WASHINGTON — “President Joe Biden’s symptoms continue to improve significantly,” the president’s doctor wrote in a Sunday letter after his Covid-19 diagnosis Thursday.

Biden’s “dominant symptom now is a sore throat,” writes Dr. Kevin O’Connor attributes what he says is likely to be “lymphoid activation as his body clears the virus” and calls the development “encouraging”.

Other symptoms, including rhinorrhea (running noise), cough and body aches, “have gone down significantly,” O’Connor said, while pulse, blood pressure, respiratory rate and temperature all remain normal.

According to O’Connor, Biden will continue to be treated with Paxlovid, with symptoms being managed “supportively” with oral hydration, Tylenol and the albuterol inhaler “as needed with an occasional cough.” Biden will continue to isolate in accordance with recommendations from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

dr Ashish Jha, the White House Covid-19 response coordinator, also commented on Biden’s condition on Sunday, telling Fox that he received his final update from the President’s medical team the night before and that Biden wished him a “good day.” would have.

“I got in touch with his team last night. That’s when I got my last update. He had a good day, he worked a little, rested a little and finally listened to some of us to rest. And so last night he just felt good,” he said.

Jha said in an interview with CBS’ Face the Nation that he suspects Biden’s case “will be a Covid trajectory that we’ve seen in a lot of Americans who’ve been fully vaccinated, double-vaccinated and given these tools by hand.” .”

“You know, the President has done well and we expect he will continue to do so,” he told the network.

Jha also agreed on Sunday to be transparent to the American people if Biden has had to endure long Covid-19 or debilitating post-Covid conditions, although he downplayed the likelihood Biden would have them.
“Absolutely,” Jha told CBS when asked if the White House would continue to make disclosures if he had long-term symptoms.

“We think it’s really important for the American people to know how well the President is doing, which is why we’ve been so transparent and shared updates several times a day,” he said. “If he has apparent ongoing symptoms, if any of them are affecting his ability to carry out his duties, we will share it with the American people early and often.”
