Erik ten Hag said Cristiano Ronaldo still has a future at Manchester United despite dropping the striker for Monday’s win over Liverpool at Old Trafford.
Ronaldo stayed on the bench as United stunned Jurgen Klopp’s side in a 2-1 win thanks to goals from Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford.
Sancho and Rashford were part of a free-flowing front three, along with Anthony Elanga, but Ten Hag believes Ronaldo can be integrated into his system.

“I think he can,” said the United manager, who brought on Ronaldo as a substitute in the 86th minute. “Throughout his career he has worked under multiple managers, different styles and systems. He’s always performed, so why can’t he?
“His age isn’t an issue. If you’re good enough and you’re old and still performing, you’re good enough.”
Ronaldo was one of four changes made by Ten Hag after a humiliating 4-0 defeat at Brentford, with captain Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Fred also on the bench.
“We have a squad and a way of playing, a style but also a game plan,” said Ten Hag when asked about the reasons for his team selection. “They look at what is the best approach to the game. We need a squad because we have a lot of games to cover, so we make the squad a team, we stick together as a squad and we achieve a lot. I’m confident of that.”
Ten Hag is expected to have new signing Casemiro available when he takes his team to Southampton on Saturday. The Brazilian midfielder watched from the stands after being introduced on the pitch ahead of kick-off against Liverpool and is set to make his St Mary’s debut.
“He has won so many trophies in his career,” said Ten Hag. “He knows the street, how to win games and how to win trophies. We have more players who have already won trophies in their careers.
“That has to be a guide for the rest of the team so they know and understand how to win things.”
