The last game of the weekend in the Premier League takes place on Monday evening. Crystal Palace host Arsenal at Selhurst Park. Roy Hodgson is back with the Eagles for another season and they got the 2023/24 season off to a good start with a 1-0 win at Sheffield United in the opening weekend.

Arsenal, meanwhile, fought off a 2-1 home win over Nottingham Forest, with Mikel Arteta’s side hoping to go one step further this season after finishing runners-up to Man City in May.

The Gunners have added the likes of Declan Rice and Kai Havertz to their squad over the summer, while Palace have lost key winger Wilf Zaha – but have so far brought in Matheus Franca from Flamengo. HT-Palace 0-0 Arsenal

A final attack at half-time for Palace but Eze is ousted and then Ayew fails to deliver a cross from a good area.

Half-time whistle blows and it’s all set at the break as Nketiah hits the post and offers Arsenal’s best chance.

44′ – Palace 0-0 Arsenal

A quick free-kick creates space on the right, but Partey’s cross is eclipsed. The ball reaches Martinelli, who decides to volley it in full sinking… high, wide and not very handsome.

We’ll have two minutes more at the end of this first half.

Referee David Coote is now being booed by both fans and it’s no wonder after his recent questionable decision. This time he gives Arsenal a free-kick for… for nothing as far as we can tell.

Saka intervenes and tries to shoot, but he fails and misses the target by miles. Palace do well to frustrate the Gunners at long stretches. Odegaard fires a shot which is tipped over by Johnstone – a first shot on target.

38′ – Palace 0-0 Arsenal

After a battle of opinions, the players quickly meet to get a word with the coaches.

The referee must recall both groups of players to continue play.

Just over five minutes before the break… plus added time, of course, which can be anything these days.

34′ – Palace 0-0 Arsenal

Terrible mistake by Saliba – and then a brilliant recovery challenge! The French defender loses the ball to Ayew, who storms into the box, but the centre-back just manages to win the ball and win the tackle as Palace fans howl at a penalty.

A moment earlier, Declan Rice had a problem with his contact lenses – but there’s nothing wrong with his vision as he bets for another chance for Nketiah… only for the striker to send his shot well over the bar.

30′ – Palace 0-0 Arsenal

Odegaard takes a free-kick down the left channel and Partey tries a long-range header but loses his balance and bends over, allowing the header to bounce harmlessly wide of the goal.

After the restart, however, Palace give the ball away and try to play it out and Nketiah makes a brilliant turn past Andersen – and although his left-footed shot tops Johnstone it just doesn’t roll back into the post, grazing the woodwork and bouncing apart from security from a palace perspective.

26′ – Palace 0-0 Arsenal

Ayew is Palace’s greatest outlet in this first quarter, but his final cross is easy to win.

At the other end, Nketiah squirms past two players, enters the penalty area and goes down – no penalty, says the referee! Havertz is then taken down mid-game by Ayew and quickly receives a yellow card.

22′ – Palace 0-0 Arsenal

Palace is now pushing a little more forward. Eze dribbles past a tackle and hammers in a shot – it gets blocked, falls to Doucoure and he tries again but he misses wide.

Arsenal are a little more patient and inquiring in their approach, working out spaces and trying to find an opening, waiting for Palace’s defense to misstep and leave a gap.

18′ – Palace 0-0 Arsenal

Tomiyasu launches a run down the left wing and picks up two attacks – but a hard-hitting tackle from Ward ends the attack and earns Arsenal a corner. Positive run from the Japanese full-back, who plays on the left flank today.
